Migrating from the Netherlands can be a complex process, but by organizing the information into clear groups, you can simplify your move. Below is a summary divided into five groups, highlighting important tax aspects to consider:
Municipality (Gemeente) Process
- Deregistration Notice: Inform the municipality (Gemeente) of your departure at least 5 days before moving.
- Contact Address: You must have a registered address where you can be contacted after your move.
- Documentation: Take the deregistration document from the municipality with you.
- Moving within the EU: You can generally take your household items without additional complications.
- Check residency requirements: Review the regulations of your new country at rijksoverheid.nl.
- Cancel subscriptions: Don’t forget to cancel all memberships and subscriptions in the Netherlands.
Personal Considerations
- DigiD: Ensure your DigiD is active to access services from abroad.
- Banks: Inform your bank of your move and update your details. If you decide to close your account, do so over the phone.
- Utilities: Cancel your water, electricity, gas, internet, and TV contracts, and check for any penalties.
- Car: Notify RDW about the export of your vehicle.
Subsidies and Pensions
- Subsidy rights: You must cancel all subsidies (childcare, medical aid, rent, etc.) that you’ve applied for. If you’re unsure how to do this, Tax-In can assist you.
- Pension: Check with your pension fund about the transfer and applicable taxes.
- Pension status: Your accrued pension will remain until you turn 67. Review your options during your stay abroad.
Tax Obligations
- Tax return: File your tax return between March and April for the year to be declared. For example, if you leave the country on July 15, 2024, you must file your tax return between March and April 2025.
- Tax debts: If you owe taxes to the Belastingdienst, inform them of your departure. Tax-In can help with this process.
- Foreign income: If you maintain income or property in the Netherlands, consult with Tax-In on how to handle your tax obligations.
- Double taxation: Check if your new country has a double taxation agreement with the Netherlands to avoid paying taxes twice.
- Unfiled returns: If you have pending returns, you can contact us from abroad to manage them for you.
If You Are Self-Employed (zzp)
- KVK registration: Update your information with the Chamber of Commerce (KVK).
- VAT returns: Prepare and submit all pending tax returns before moving.
- Business closure: Notify the KVK of your business closure, as it is not done automatically. If you’re unsure how to proceed, Tax-In can assist you.
Conclusion
Leaving the Netherlands involves several important steps, especially regarding taxes and the procedures with the Gemeente. It is essential to be well-informed and organized to ensure a smooth transition. Consider consulting a tax advisor to properly manage your tax obligations and ensure a successful relocation process.
